Internet Videos Show "How To"

Want to do more on Mac, your iPhone, your iPad?  John Carter found a site for you that has 500+ video tutorials.
John says, "There are several places on the Internet where you can get video tutorials that clearly step through the processes one needs to know to accomplish what may seem at the outset to be only for gurus.
"For instance, you’ve probably heard about Pixelmator and how it can give you fine control over editing a photo at a fraction of the price of Adobe Photoshop CS. Or, now that Yosemite is out, just how much more can it do and how can you discover how to use those new features?
"From iOS to Mac, there is one place dedicated to helping Mac users learn all they can, and even introduce applications you’ve probably never heard of, and that’s ScreenCastsOnline.com."

Using Siri

"For those of us with iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad, we've had access to Siri for a long time but we probably rarely use it," Art Gorski begins.  He explains, "I've found that when I'm in the supermarket and I need 2 cups of something for a recipe but the item lists its size in grams, I can just ask Siri 'How many grams in 2 cups?'  Cool."
"There's a gazillion useful things like this that Siri can do, but how do you figure out what they are without a lot of annoying trial and error? Did you know that you can use Siri to voice dictate an email or a text document?"
And Art sends this helpful link:  "Here's a great website with tons of tutorials worth exploring: http://www.siriuserguide.com "

Maps.Me is FREE

Jim Hamm has another interesting bit of info here:  "For travel there is an app for your iPhone or iPad that is free today: Maps.Me. In this app you can download maps of the various states ( or even around the world) which you can use when you're offline. Normally the cost is $5 for this app. You might take a look and download it from the App Store."   https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/maps.me-pro-offline-maps/id510623322?mt=8

iPad 4 For Sale

John Carter announces that as soon as his iPad Air 2 arrives he will release his iPad4 for sale for $375.00.   He says, "There are minor dents and scratches, and it is fully functional. This includes Logitech Ultrathin keyboard cover, the original box and power adapter included for both iPad and keyboard.  It's  updated with iOS 8.1, and it's reset to factory defaults." You can call John at 928-458-0570 or email him at john@jrcarter.com  and he'll be happy to give you more details.

Learn Via Video, etc.

Helpful PMUG leader John Carter scores big with this link, www.macmost.com/  and you'll want to take a look at this website.  Turns out they have more than 900 FREE video tutorials on how to use your Mac, iPad, iPhone and other Apple Technology.
And here's some very welcome news: They never sell, rent or share your email address.  Read details at Policies.
No, we're not listing all 900 of their video tutorials.  But look at some of these other helpful categories.

Here's another list of pages you'll want to check out.
And this concludes the August PMUG meeting handout that's not getting handed out tomorrow, August 16; it's just posted here for your convenience.  Thanks again to John Carter who keeps an eye out for useful info for us.

Ransomware Attack: What To Do

" Here is another article discussing what to do if your iPhone or iPad is hacked for ransomware."  And, of course, Jim Hamm immediately gets our attention.   "Unfortunately, hacks such as this are becoming more frequent as the following quote from the article mentions:
'Database breaches are becoming far too common, with eBay, Adobe, Yahoo, and Target all falling victim in recent months.'
Jim's advice is, "It seems the best thing to do to prevent this is to switch to a two-step verification process on your device.....

iPad Charger

Got an iPad?  Here's a well-illustrated article, 20-pages long, that gives details you need.
Jim Hamm informs us, "The charger for the iPad is relatively expensive at $19 if purchased from Apple. Sure, you can purchase counterfeit lookalikes for a much cheaper price. Should you? In a word, NO! The old adage 'you get what you pay for'  is certainly true in this case. Here is an excellent article explaining why you should stick with the genuine Apple iPad charger."

Office for iPad

"Microsoft is bringing Office to the iPad. Take a read here. (Allow cookies on your computer to access this site.) It is free in a read-only mode, but costs $100/year if one wants to write to the app. A smart move by Microsoft, but perhaps a bit late," comments Jim Hamm.  He goes on to suggest, "If you plan to use Office for the iPad, here are 5 tips you might take a look at."

Clip Art, Photos, Recent Discoveries

What a clever picture.  It grabbed my attention and I just had to read what the article said.  Ever said that?
Google to the rescue.  Well, first I emailed John Carter to ask where he’d found the photo he posted to the pmug.us website.

So, I followed his directions and now I can show it to you.
Google makes it easy to bring up lots of illustrations, clip art, photos.  Here’s a screen shot of the entry I made:  (Click to enlarge this; click again to get back to this page)
In the search box I had typed “street sign, confused, lost, unclear” not knowing any more descriptive terms for what I wanted.  The first search page allowed me to select “Images.”
A huge selection came up, and I could click Show More Results at the bottom of the page.  Click on any illustration and see what the information says.  Some will be stock photos with an embedded watermark.  That means you’ll need to read about licensing, extended license, additional multi-seat License.  Copyright info is on that company’s page.  Click to view Photos, Vectors, Footage, Audio, Mobile, Pricing.  See the company’s phone number, live help number.
One photo I looked at had a tiny icon in the upper right hand of the page.  Here’s a screen shot of the list that came up.
It was fun, clicking to see how the various languages came up in the illustrations.
Try it out on some of your blogging or emails.  Your family will be impressed with your knowledge of other languages.

Looking up “shepherd and sheep”  I scrolled down and when I’d gotten to the 64th picture I found a photo of my son Peter, holding his sheep on his shoulder.  I had posted it to my blog, www.EncouragingU.blogspot.com months ago and  they’ve put it up for anyone to help themselves to the picture.  Clicking on it brings up that page in my blog, with the verses I posted with it.  And on the Google Image page a person can click, bringing it up as JPG 800x533 pixels.
We hadn’t thought that it would be automatically available to anyone else.  Hopefully, if someone wanted a copy they’d write and ask for permission.  Maybe that’s wishful thinking, on my part.

Instead of CarPlay

Quick to reply, John Carter explains his view of CarPlay that Prez Art Gorski described yesterday. He jests, "Hah! Nothing new to me. Everything that CarPlay does I can already do with my iPhone (or iPad) and a bluetooth headset.

"On a recent trip to California, I kept in constant touch with Jackie using Messages. Siri recorded my messages to Jackie and then read back any new message from Jackie. (It wasn’t always perfect.) I listened to music or podcasts when I wasn’t messaging. With the iPhone attached to the windshield, I was always up to date with directions to my destination. I could even hazard watching a video. And of course, the only real drawback was when I was out of touch of a tower when driving through mountains, but that didn’t stop me from listening to music."

Apple is a Worldwide Leader

"Here is an article which graphically summarizes what an impact the iPad -- and other tablets -- have had on the computer industry," is how Jim Hamm begins.  "I can remember when the iPad first came out and reading about all the snickering of the name, the cost, the lack of being a 'real' computer, etc, of a tablet. But people sure buy tablets -- to the detriment of PC shipments."
Jim goes on to comment, "I can also recall Microsoft's Ballmer's derision of the iPhone when it first came out. Now just look how smart phones have taken off. I bet a high % of the population in the U.S. owns one."

And here's Jim's conclusion, "Like it or not -- technology moves on and leaders of successful companies need to recognize that or fade away. The Blackberry phone comes to mind as I type this statement. Then I look at the stagnation in growth of HP and Dell and think hmmmm?"
