how to

Avoid This Amazon Virus

John Carter grabs our attention with this information on how to avoid this Amazon virus.
"Here’s a new way to install a virus or tracking cookie on your computer. Just make the email message look like an official note from Amazon and include a zip file to click on to let the curious try to figure out what it’s all about.
The email address in the message wasn't mine.  I never order from Amazon using the email address the message used.  And if I wanted to verify the order, I would go online and check out the order ID mentioned in this email.

Yahoo Groups: Upgrades & Changes

"If you are using one of the Yahoo Groups and your Mac is not at the latest OS update, you may find that you can’t upload files/photos to your Yahoo Group anymore," John Carter says.  He goes on to explain,  "A friend of mine posted this comment:

Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, etc. have all recently made significant "upgrades??" - in their minds, not mine - to include numerous social networking capabilities to their e-mail sites, group sites, etc. They all require significant upgrading of the Mac OS on my primary desktop computer from OS 10.4.11. I cannot upgrade the OS for this computer because it's a PowerPC G5 and I still want to maintain OS 9 Classic for a couple of legacy programs. It appears that the changes Yahoo, Google & Microsoft made to the functioning of their various sites are incompatible with OS 10.4.11. I only get rudimentary e-mail capabilties on my desktop now - barely functional. The sites work perfectly fine on my MacBook Pro OS 10.6.8 - for now."

John explains his conclusion, "So, if you thought that you could continue to use your old OS for years to come, then the changes that are happening with websites are in the direction of what’s happening with the new versions of any OS, be it Mac or Windows, will leave you behind and not able to work with those websites. If upgrading your computer or OS means giving up a legacy app, welcome to the 21st Century! Find the best alternative, if any at all, and move on. And all this just to be able to continue browsing the Internet and using online services!"

Finding Incompatible Software

PMUG Prez Art Gorski sends this helpful info, "It turns out that newer versions of Mac OS X protect you from running old incompatible software.  These apps are moved to a folder named "Incompatible Software" at the top level of your hard drive. If you have such a folder on your Mac, look in there for the apps that you should update to newer versions."   http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

How to Synchronize Keychain on Mavericks

John Carter's been at it again:  figuring it out and then showing us.  Here's his information on how to deal with keychain on Mavericks:
Setting up the Keychain Access to share between devices got to be a bit of a chore today.  I had to go online to resolve a serious problem.

A prompt popped up asking me for the keychain 'Local Items' password, and then it wouldn’t accept anything I put in.
The solution is (found online here) :
Your login.keychain password is out of sync with the new iCloud keychain and needs to be re-sync'd.
The new iCloud keychain is either called "Local items" if you don't have
syncing enabled or "iCloud" if you enabled iCloud keychain sync.

  1. Open 'Keychain Access' Application
  2. Select the 'login' keychain from the keychains list
  3. Click the lock at the top to lock the login keychain
  4. Click the lock again to unlock the login keychain
5. After entering your login keychain password you should be presented with a dialog:
6. Clicking the reset button will re-sync your login.keychain password with the iCloud keychain password.
If everything from the above fails for whatever reason the last resort you can do the following:
  1. Open terminal
  2. cd ~/Library/Keychains
  3. ls
    1. When you 'ls' here you will see a folder that contains a bunch of random number liks so:
    2. 94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464  (this number is unique on each system)
  4. rm -rf 94ED610F-DD96-4ECF-A2BC-7D2F8651A464
  5. Reboot
  6.  and  when you log back in everything should be back to normal.    And that's it.  # # #

Running Windows on a Mac

"Here's a good article (here) on comparing all the available resources for running Windows on a Mac," states John Carter.  He explains,  "The comparison includes Dual Booting, Running Windows in a Virtual Machine, and Running Windows Apps Directly in Mac OS X — Without Windows. There is even a link for Choosing the Right Windows 8 For Your Mac.

John goes on to explain his viewpoint, "Personally, my choice is to use Parallels Desktop for Mac. I’ve tried all the other resources and this one has the fewest problems. I’ve been using Parallels for a several years and I have no regrets using it. Occasionally, I’ll try out VMWare, VirtualBox, and CodeWeavers only to be disappointed by them."

13 New Tricks in OS X Mavericks

"Here are some helpful tips if you've updated to Mavericks," Jim Hamm gets our attention.  He goes on to explain,  "Tip #6 is handy in the syncing aspect, especially since I do use a secure Keychain for my sensitive passwords and to have them synced and handy on my iPhone and iPad would be nice. I do have mixed emotions about this feature, though -- I'm not a fan of storing my passwords in the Cloud. So far I've not implemented this feature."
